How can I cite a secondary source (source within a source)?
Answer
Many textbooks, journal articles and webpages cite the earlier books/articles/webpages on the same topic.
In the text, the primary source needs to be identified and then the words “as cited in” added before the secondary source. A reference list entry needs to be provided only for the secondary source.
For example: Wallace et al. (1999) describe students as academics in training and assignments as a representation of scholarly articles and reports that are published in academic and professional fields (as cited in Massey University, 2018).
In this example Wallace et al (1999) will be the primary source, and the Massey University will be the secondary source. You only need to create the reference list entry for the secondary source:
Massey University. (2018, October 23). Why reference? http://owll.massey.ac.nz/referencing/why-reference.php
